Tilting Re-circulating Water Channel (U of A)

Coanda was contracted by the University of Alberta to design and build a tilting re-circulating water channel. The design incorporates a multi-section channel design with both a feed plenum and discharge plenum. The channel is designed to incorporate the University’s sump to provide a recirculation path. Some of the features of this design include large span glass sections that provide complete visual access from the sides and fiberglass base panels that allow easy fastening of fixtures to the surface. The feed plenum and internal components are designed to provide fully developed shortly after entering the channel. The discharge plenum provides both flowing fluid level adjustment through the use of a weir assembly while also providing flow conditioning to direct the stream into the sump. The tilting of the channel is accomplished through a multi-position mechanically linked jacking system that is driven by a single motor.

Channel Specifications:

  • Channel Length: 25m
  • Channel Width: 1.2m
  • Channel Depth: 0.8m
  • Channel Adjustable Grade: 0 to 1% (positive)
  • Velocity Range: 0 – 0.3m/s (channel full)
  • Pump Capacity: 5000 USGPM
